AnalGland Expression
We can help manage discomfort with quick, gentle gland expression when needed. The anal glands are a set of scent glands that empty into the rectum in many mammals, including cats and dogs. These small pouches are located on either side of the anus.

Common Signs and Symptoms

In Dogs: Signs that you may need to express the glands manually include redness in the area, scooting or dragging the anal area along the ground and licking or biting at the rectum or the tail.
In Cats: Scooting or dragging the anal area along the ground and licking or biting at the rectum or the tail. Affected cats may also show hair loss around the base of the tail or on the belly, due to excessive grooming. Your cat may also be reluctant to defecate.
